Florida protrudes into the ocean from the south-eastern corner of the USA. It can almost be described as an island with the Atlantic washing the coastline on its eastern side and the western shores being lapped by the tropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama. It is near several Caribbean countries, particularly the Bahamas and Cuba.

Florida has the 4th highest state population in the United States at just over 18 million, with the state growing steadily by about 1% a year, with almost 1000 people a day moving into the state.
